Let's Go Play... (Marie-Goreth Ndayarinze, Bujumbura 2007)
« Hi, hi, hi... ha, ha, ha... » — a group of children's laughter, drawn right on the cover, before a single line is read. A book made for and with children, by Marie-Goreth Ndayarinze.
The intention is unmistakable from the cover alone: children sitting against a stone wall, laughing out loud, their laughter spelled out in print — « Hi, hi, hi... ha, ha, ha... ». « Tujajure », roughly « let's go play », sets the tone for a book built for Burundian childhood, published in Bujumbura in August 2007.
The colourful illustration — a hillside scene, children gathered in the shade of a traditional enclosure — grounds the story in a recognisable everyday life rather than an imported one.
A book to read aloud, as a family, to find again that group laughter no one truly forgets.
