An author with an unusual path

Born in 1952 on Rutamanzura hill, Nyamushirwa Lydwine studied in Bujumbura, earned a university technology diploma in Chatenay-Malabry, France, then directed Burundi's National Ballets for nearly a decade before turning to cultural work and writing.

Life's stages, not a simple narrative

« Ijambo mu ntambwe z'ubuzima bw'Umurundi » — literally « A word on the stages of a Burundian's life » — positions this Volume I as an opening door: the author herself notes on the last page that « more books will follow this one ». Written in Kirundi, the text speaks first to Burundian readers wanting to pass on to their children what traditional rites say about life.

A read for anyone who wants to understand Burundi from within — not from a foreign textbook.
