Rejoice! — Circular Letter to Consecrated Men and Women (Pope Francis, Rome, February 2, 2014)

Published on February 2, 2014 by the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, this circular letter is addressed first to men and women religious, for the Year of Consecrated Life. But its title — an imperative, « Rejoice! » — reaches well beyond its first audience.
Drawn from the magisterium of Pope Francis, the text insists on joy as the distinguishing mark of a life given to God — not a naive joy, but one that holds despite the concrete difficulties of consecrated life.
A useful read for any consecrated person, but also for anyone trying to understand why Christian joy differs from simple optimism.
