The engraved portrait on the cover — headscarf tied, shawl on the shoulders — could come from a 19th-century book. That's intentional: Bernadette Soubirous, the young shepherdess to whom the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared at Lourdes in 1858, has belonged to this popular iconography for over 150 years.

This Kirundi booklet retraces her life plainly — the poverty, the apparitions, the authorities' distrust, then the canonisation. An accessible text, meant to pass on a well-loved figure of sainthood to readers who may not have grown up with the story.

An easy way in to one of the world's best-known Marian accounts.
